The Health Benefits of Goats Milk

It all begins with the goats. My goats are registered Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats and are from proven milking lines. Some hail from Arizona, Blue Cactus Dairy, and some from a local breeder in Lemoore, Ca. Together I have two does who produced over a gallon and a half of milk each day in their first freshening! My goats are fed high quality alfalfa hay and are allowed to browse all day. They are given supplements on a regular basis and are vaccinated and blood tested for disease as well.

My doe’s milk is creamy and light tasting. It tastes like store bought cow milk, only much smoother. I don’t drink milk much, but when my does produce I find myself drinking it every day. Unfortunately, I have cookies with it. I lightly scald my milk or I drink it raw. I milk my goats with a closed system, their teats are washed and rinsed prior to each milking, and they have a bacterial sprayed onto their teats after each milking. I strain my milk through a tiny mesh strainer as well as 8 layers of cheesecloth before scalding. It is strained again while pouring into jars. If raw, I strain the same way but more times before pouring into jars.

There are different benefits of scalded vs. raw milk, I do not taste a difference. The proteins are broken down during scalding and baked items turn out differently. Goat milk is better for people because it is easier for us to digest. Otherwise, it is not much different, all in all. I prefer it. It is a matter of taste.

California does not allow hobby farm sale of goat milk without certification, so I may not sale this milk for human consumption. I can sell it for orphaned animals - it is the best replacement for kittens and puppies. I CAN sell my goats milk if the person OWNS the goat, so I can share costs of my goats so that milk is “free” to the purchaser. This can be done with a floating contract.
